When is Your Old Furniture Worth Keeping

By removing the clutter in our homes and our daily lives we can keep fresh perspectives and maintain a sense of peace and order. One of the earliest achievements in our adult lives is sometimes the purchase of a new sofa and now that sofa has aged and we no longer use it. We still like the old sofa, we just don’t use it much anymore now that we have upgraded to a new sofa and moved this one to a room that doesn’t get a great deal of use. You really don’t want to get rid of it but don’t know if it is worth the cost of taking it somewhere to be repaired and given new life. The debate between the two options weighs heavy on your mind. Is it a wise choice to have this sofa repaired? What if having the couch repaired would cost as much as buying a brand new one? Is it still worth saving then? It is not always a waste to put that kind of effort and expense into saving an old sofa. We’ll talk about some in this article.

The frame can hold the key. If the frame seems sturdy and appears that it could stand up to more use that is a good starting point. By replacing the foam, coverings, and any worn out hardware you can have a brand new sofa with a bit of heritage to it, provided that the frame did check out alright. Minor design modifications are possible by adding more foam in places and this is a great time to try a new color and even a new type of fabric. Leather anyone?

Keeping a classic is often a wise choice. It is often said that they just don’t make them like they used to and this is true of furniture as well. You may be holding onto a bit of history. Vintage furniture pieces can become valuable as collectables because of their classic nature and styling.

Sentimental value can be a huge factor in deciding whether or not to keep that piece of furniture. If a piece of furniture has been passed on from generation to generation of your family, an heirloom like that is almost definitely worth saving. You can’t put a price tag on sentimental value, so by all means, try and save a piece of furniture that has much of it.

Of course, if the piece of furniture is nearly impossible to repair or will cost too much money; the best alternative is to commission a craftsman to create an exact duplicate of the furniture.

Still can’t decide if you want to save your furniture and have them repaired? Have a trusted craftsman or a furniture upholsterer look at the piece of furniture. As experts on the matter, they’ll be sure to know what to do.
